Structural Connections: Do They Have to Be Steel?

July 4th, 2018

Accidents in the construction of a building cannot be foreseen, but they can always be prevented. Most structural accidents usually happen because of a loose connection. Where the joints connect to a beam that is also attached to a column, failure of a tight and sturdy connection could lead to unimaginable damage, not only to the structure itself but also to the properties and sometimes, even lives of people are put at risk.

Most structural structures should be using steel connectors for a more efficient approach to structural safety. The structural engineer is the one that provides the plan that’s why he must also give precise instructions on the steel connectors that need to be used. These specifications must then be followed to ensure that the steel structure is adequately connected for the utmost safety of everyone. However, very few people know that structural engineers rarely design the connectors that they use.

Historically, steel fabricators are the ones that create various designs of connectors based on the need that they have at the moment. What happens is that the steel fabricators get the sizes of the connectors that the engineer needs and fabricates them to the right fit. From there, the connectors will be evaluated and checked by the engineer and approve of its use. This may seem like a complicated system but is it what indeed works for the steel structures that are already built.

The right fit of the connectors used should always be the primary goal. And if it means fabricating a specific one for each user, then that is the safest way to go. The importance of these connectors in building a sturdy and robust structure could not be undermined. It is also essential to understand the difference between pin connectors and fixed connections. Although it may seem as if fix connections are the best way to go, the use of pin connectors also come with their benefits.

The beams that are bolted to a column may require a pin connector. The angles that are created along the beam can easily be adjusted when a pin connector is used. Such use could allow the beam to be put in place, not be moved up or down, in or out. But it could be rotated a bit, and that makes all the difference.

A fixed connection does not allow any rotation to be made. Sometimes, this can be good. However, some structures require that the beams be rotated at least a little bit and make adjustments possible.

All these possibilities in the construction of various structures make use of steel all because of one reason – it is one of the most reliable materials that can be used for a safe structure. It is best to ask questions for concerns about steel to ensure the success of a project.
