Welding Over Bolting: What’s The Difference?

May 13th, 2018

When it comes to creating steel connections, it is highly essential that you know your connector options. Each one comes with its advantages and disadvantages, depending on how or what you aim to use them for. Steel buildings have become highly in demand as they not only provide a sturdy structure, but they also last for many years.

Welding is one of the most popular options when it comes to putting together various forms of steel together. Its popularity rests not only on the idea that it is a viable option for most cases when connectors of steel structures are needed, but because it comes with its share of benefits too. Here are some of them in a list:

·       Welding creates a low-stress concentration where the connections are made. This means that it does not add to the stress that the structure is already put into under. Compared to the use of bolt where pressure is put where every bolt is, welding evens the distribution of stress that allows proper connection of steel materials.

·        It is in the strength of the welded joints that makes all the difference. Because welding itself puts two steel materials practically as one, allowing it to be stronger than any other connection. Since the two or more metal parts are welded together to become one, it becomes stronger than those that may be connected only by a bolt.

·       When you want to create a structure that may be exposed to vibration, low to high impact as well as fatigue load, it is best to consider welding over the bolt. Both may be able to provide you with a unified structure, but materials that are welded withstand the strength of the pressure put on it.

·     The power of welded parts lies in the combination of the metal parts. Because there are no holes that need to be filled or areas that should be tightened, the cross section that is welded is useful in carrying heavy loads.

Welding or bolting? What should you choose? Experts in the steel building and steel fabrication recommends that you consider using both. The choice of which one to use in a particular situation depends a lot on its purpose as well as the pressure it will be exposed to. It’s always best to consult steel experts to ensure the safety and security of the structure.
