Structural steel is a type of steel which is molded into a variety of shapes to use in construction sectors. It takes a high level of expertise to produce structural steel erections. Structural steel fabricators Edmonton Alberta are well versed with it. There are certain codes which these fabricators have to adhere to as per the Canada Welding Bureau (CWB). The CWB was initiated by the Canadian Standard Association (CSA) to offer stability and safety in the use of welding. Here are the major codes of structural steel design.
CSA W47.1 (Qualification):
This code certifies a company based on the kind of steel welding work undertaken by it. To adhere to this code, a company has to get their welding supervisors and engineers qualified, get approval for their procedures and also qualify their welding operators. There are three divisions to this code.
Division 1 – The establishment should have full-time registered engineers to overlook the welding process.
Division 2 – The establishment should have part-time registered engineers to overlook the welding process.
Division 3 - The establishment is not required to have a registered engineer, employed or retained.
Northern Weldarc is a CSA W47.1 certified steel fabricator. We work on embeds, chutes, structural steel, pipe shoes, and module fabrication. To know more about us, contact us.
CSA W48 (Electrodes)
This code of structural steel design frames the need for certification of the welding electrodes either by themselves or in combination with the gas mixtures. Along with the certification of these consumables, the company has to devise a system for the quality management. This system will offer instructions on how to produce, inspect, package, label and transport these consumables.
CSA W59 (Fabrication & Quality)
Under this code, the fabricators can only make use of studs which are qualified by the CWB qualification program. In cases of studs being shopped or field applied, the manufacturer has to get them qualified under any one of the following CWB codes: CSA W59, AWS D1.1, AWS D1.5 or AWS D1.6.
CSA W178.2 (Inspection)
This code sketches out the need for an eligible welding inspector. The same can be done by clearing one of the three levels of the examination. Welding inspectors are trained for both, theory and application of visual inspection. Therefore, they are required to pass both the practical and theory exam set by the CWB. To be eligible for a level 1 certified inspector, the candidate must have at least a year’s experience in fabrication planning, manual/semi-automatic welding, welding supervision, inspection, testing, detailing and fitting. To be eligible for level 2, the candidate must have at least 2 years of experience as a level 1 inspector. Similarly, to be a level 3 inspector, the candidate must have at least 4 years of experience as a level 2 inspector. A structural steel fabrication inspection requires such qualification.
Before you initiate any structural steel project, it is essential that you understand the codes of a structural steel building. For structural steel fabricators Edmonton Alberta, it is mandatory to adhere to these codes. A structural steel fabricator should have a certification in at least one of these codes. When hiring a structural steel fabricator, make sure to choose a firm that is following these codes.
