Stick welding is an informal name for shielded metal arc welding, also known as manual metal arc welding or flux shielded arc welding. It is one of the widely used welding processes by structural steel companies in Alberta. Stick welding is a manual arc welding process which makes use of a stick also known as an electrode, which is covered with a flux to lay down the weld.
The Process
In the process of stick welding, the flux covering the electrode or the stick disintegrates. This disintegration of the flux forms vapors and slags that shield the arc and the molten weld pool. The melted flux coating on the electrode protects the weld pool from atmospheric contamination. Post the welding process; this slag is chipped off. Stick welding is only possible on metals that thin up to 18 gauges. Also, the stick needs frequent changing.
Before you start stick welding ensure that you are aware of your arc length as it varies for each electrode. The best way to avoid utilizing a wrong arc is to use an arc which is equivalent to the diameter of the electrode. Also, ensure not to clench the electrode too far or too close as it will increase the amount of splatter created.
Advantages
Stick welding equipment is basic, easy to use, easy to move, and not very costly.
Stick welding is a very adaptable method when it comes to the environment. The process can be done indoors and outdoors and is also possible in remote locations.
Stick welding process is not disrupted by wind, rains or weather conditions.
Stick welding can be done on most of the commonly used alloys and metals such as stainless steel and aluminum.
The process is cost-effective as it does not require any external shielding gas.
The process saves time on pre-welding cleaning as it is not sensitive to corrosion, paint or dirt.
Limitations
Stick welding is a slow process when compared to other welding methods.
It is not a method for thinner metals sheets.
Stick welding takes time when it comes to chipping the slag formed during the welding.
Only an expert in stick welding can do it with precision.
There is a frequent change of the rod which again makes it time-consuming.
The amount of splatter created in stick welding is more than other methods.
Stick welding requires some level of expertise to create good welds. Also, like any form of welding, safety gears are essential for stick welding too, as the process does emit smoke and fumes. It is even more necessary when working in confined places. Hiring one of the structural steel companies in Alberta for stick welding is necessary to get the work done with precision.
