Halloween

Happy Halloween

It happens every year on October 31st… the scariest day of the year for some, as for others, it is the most exciting day of the year. There are both tricks and treats to be had and we really hope it is more treats than tricks.

Halloween originated with the ancient celtic festival of Samhain—where ghosts of the dead returned to earth and people would wear costumes and light bonfires to ward them off. It is also known as All Hallows Eve. Over time it has become more of a festival and party for everyone to enjoy! Newer traditions were also created, including pumpkin carvings, handing out treats, tricking others, having parties, wearing costumes, and enjoying lots and lots of candy. However, this Halloween we also have to deal with the scary thought of COVID-19. Here are some of the things to be aware of during this time:

Handing Out Candy During COVID-19:

- Wear a mask.

- If weather permits, set up a station on the front lawn.

- Don’t leave out self-serve bowls of bulk candy.

- Wear gloves.

Pumpkins:

- When carving with kids, ensure supervision and make sure it is done on a flat, stable surface.

- Place the carved pumpkins away from where people walk and away from any flammable materials.

- Consider using artificial lights instead of actual candles, like flameless candles and glow sticks.

- Keep candles away from flammable objects, including drapes and sofas.

- Don’t leave pumpkins unattended when candles are in them. Blow them out if leaving the room or going to bed for the night.

Safety on the Streets:

- Kids should not go out alone. Ensure at least one adult is with them even when in a group and carry a cell phone.

- Keep an eye out for kids during Halloween. You never know when a kid may dash out in front of a vehicle. Be extra careful!

- Remind your child about the rules of pedestrian safety—only cross at street corners or crosswalks and never pass between parked cars.

- Attach reflective tape to your child’s costume and goodie bags.

- As with any time of year, remind them to never get into a stranger’s car.

When You Get Home:

- Inspect all treats in your child’s bag. Dispose of items with open or broken wrappers and discard any homemade snacks, apples, and any questionable treats.

- If your child has a food allergy, inspect candy labels to confirm they are safe to eat.

- With COVID in play, all candy should be quarantined for four days. Have some backup candy for the kids to have when they get home, just to be safe! They have worked hard to earn those treats.

Let’s all have a fun, safe, and happy Halloween!
